Aim: The aim of this unit is to develop students' awareness of the different kinds of strategy which could be used in an operational, tactical or strategic role for an organisation. This will be underpinned by a thorough knowledge and understanding of the theories, models and concepts which could significantly support an organisation's strategic choice and direction.
LO1 Analyse the impact and influence which the macro environment has on an organisation and its business strategies
LO2 Assess an organisation's internal environment and capabilities
LO3 Evaluate and apply the outcomes of an analysis using Porter's Five Forces model to a given market sector
LO4 Apply models, theories and concepts to assist with the understanding and interpretation of strategic directions available to an organisation
Task:
Scenario:
You have been recruited as a corporate strategy manager for a well-known airline of your choice. The airline is looking to develop a strategic growth management plan which will secure the airline's growth and development over the next three years.
There are a number of environmental trends emerging over the next few years that could affect the development of any strategy proposed. There is a recent increase in the level of competition found in air travel.
The airline would need an internal and external analysis that provides a basis for the strategic planning for the airline.
You have been asked to prepare a report in three parts for the airline
LO1 Analyse the impact and influence which the macro environment has on an organisation and its business strategies
LO2 Assess an organisation's internal environment and capabilities
Task 1 :
Report Part (A) You are to complete an internal and external analysis to help develop a future strategy and a strategic management plan.
• An Analysis carried out for the selected airline by using a PESTLE and SWOT analysis
and an analysis of the organisation's capabilities using appropriate frameworks
• You need to critically analyse and interpret information from the macro environment and how it can be used for strategic management decisions and directions
• You need to critically evaluate and interpret the information from the internal environment to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the airline for strategic management decisions and directions.

Task 2 (LO3): Evaluate and apply the outcomes of an analysis using Porter's Five
Forces model to a given market sector
Report Part (B) To help understand the present level of competition for the selected airline you have to:
• Apply the Porter's Five Forces model to evaluate the forces and the competitive
environment within which the airline operates in
• Devise appropriate strategies to improve the airlines competitive edge and market position based on the analysis
• Critically interpret the information and data from the competitive analysis to further help with strategic management decisions and directions

Task 3 (LO4): Apply models, theories and concepts to assist with the understanding and interpretation of strategic directions available to an organisation
Report Part C: Devise a strategic plan based on the environmental analysis and findings:
• Produce a strategic management plan for the airline with the objectives strategies and tactics within it. Evaluate what different types of strategic priorities are available for the airline using an array of relevant theories and models
• Justify and recommend the strategic directions for the airline, using both the critical, other information and data collected from the environmental and competitive analysis.
