Unit 20 Analogue Electronic Circuits - Pearson International BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering
Assignment 1 - Single function analogue circuits
Learning aim 1: Investigate through research and simulation the operation of single function analogue electronic circuits.
Learning aim 2: Explore the operation of single function analogue electronic circuits safely that form the building blocks of commercial circuits.
Task 1 You have been asked to explore a range of single function analogue circuits by carrying out software simulation and constructing circuits to compare their theoretical and physical operation.
To do this:
Your tutor will provide you with a range of circuit diagrams for six different types of analogue circuit. You need to:
a) Use a Computer Aided Design software package to capture and simulate at least two circuits for each of the analogue circuit types.
o Power supply
o Passive filters
o Transistor amplifiers
o Operational Amplifiers
o Oscillators
o Communications applications
You should make sure that your diagrams are drawn to appropriate national or international standards.
b) Use an appropriate prototyping method to construct each of the analogue electronic circuits in activity a) and take measurements to demonstrate the operation of each one (at least twelve circuits in total).
c) Calculate theoretical measurements for each type of analogue circuit (at least twelve circuits in total) to demonstrate the relationship between component values and circuit parameters.
You should then:
Compare the results from your simulation, the physical circuit and theoretical calculation for each of the analogue circuits. You should use this comparison to evaluate the operation of each of the circuits, taking into account any differences between the results gathered from the physical circuits and those achieved theoretically or through simulations.
Note: You may prefer to carry out the "investigate, simulate, build and test and write up" of each circuit before progressing to the next circuit.
You should then:
Compare the results from your simulation, the physical circuit and theoretical calculation for each of the analogue circuits. You should use this comparison to evaluate the operation of each of the circuits, taking into account any differences between the results gathered from the physical circuits and those achieved theoretically or through simulations.
Assignment 2 - Modification of a single function analogue electronic circuit to meet a given specification.
Learning aim: Modify a single function analogue electronic circuit to meet given parameters as widely undertaken in industry
Task 1 You are going to interpret a given client brief that is based on one of the circuits you investigated in Assignment 1 and then select components to construct the analogue circuit to meet the given client brief. You should systematically simulate, construct, test and fault-find the circuit to make sure that it operates as intended.
To do this:
You need to complete a series of activities to make sure that the modified circuit meets the client brief. As a starting point you should use the same layout for the circuit you are modifying as you previously investigated in Assignment 1.
You will need to produce a development log for the circuit that includes evidence of planning the modification of your given circuit. You will need to:
a) calculate key component values for the circuit to meet the given specification
b) simulate the circuit using your component values, and modify as necessary
c) design a layout for the permanent construction of the circuit
d) During these activities (a to c) you should consider any alternative solutions giving reasons for your preferred choice.
You will also need to:
Construct a one-off version of your modified circuit using a permanent construction method. You will construct the circuit safely, taking into account appropriate risk assessments for your workshop
You will also need to test the circuit to check that it meets the required specification. You will use a range of resources to complete this including diagrams and test equipment. You should record and interpret the results of tests in your development log.
Assignment 3- Lessons learnt exploring single function analogue circuits
Review the development of analogue electronic circuits and reflect on own performance
Task 1 You have been asked to review and reflect on the practical activities you have carried out when investigating and exploring analogue circuits. You now need to produce a short report that considers the ‘lessons learnt' during the process.
To do this:
You will need to collate all of your work for Assignments 1 and 2 into a single portfolio. You should then review and reflect on the activities that have been completed for assignments 1 and 2, and make notes about what went well and what improvements could be made. You will also need to consider what you would do differently next time.
You will then:
Prepare a short ‘lessons learnt' report that includes the lessons learnt from:
• exploring analogue circuits, including:
o health and safety skills, such as managing electrical hazards. This could include electric shock and emergency actions, using appropriate personal protective equipment and keeping the work area clean and tidy
o analogue electronic circuit development skills, such as: identifying components and their characteristics, schematic capture, simulation, quality control methods and construction methods
o general engineering skills, such as mathematics and interpreting drawings, use of IT and CAD.
• your personal performance, including:
o time planning and management to complete all the different activities in an appropriate time and order
o communication and literacy skills to follow and implement instructions appropriately, interpret documentation and communicate effectively with others in writing and orally
o commercial and customer awareness to ensure the analogue circuits are fit for purpose and meet the brief.
Your report should clearly differentiate between statements of fact and opinions.
