ASSIGNMENT
Objective
This coursework is designed in the form of set questions and design scenario. The tasks are divided into four sections, with section compromising several questions. The coursework should be submitted as one document in a report format.
Assignment Scenario:
Personal Research Development (PRD) is a small company of network operatives and managers who look after the IT systems for other small and medium companies within West London. From their offices, they provide network management services both remotely and at the client's premises.
PRD have offered you a work experience placement with the view of giving you a permanent position within the company. During the work experience placement, a number of tasks will be set to ensure that you know about networking technologies, understand network management functions and be able to carry out network management activities by using different network equipment.
The PRD company LAN will incorporate different departments and will be equipped respectively as follows:
HR: 10 Computers/Laptops
Design: 30 computers
Sales: 15 computers
Research and Development (R&D): 10 computers
Note: Shared resources should be more appreciable to be utilized such as printers The network consists of several Servers:
All servers are shared between all the departments
The company will be using a private IP address 192.168.100.0/24
You are required to design and implement a network according to the new requirements.
Given the above scenario, you have to produce a report for your line manager that includes some recommendations based on the above requirements. And this including:
LO1
Produce a report, explaining the roles of networks in different organizations. The report needs to cover all aspects of network approaches including:
a) Functional benefits of local area network in organizations.
b) Evaluation of Peer to peer, Client-server, Virtualization and Cloud networks.
c) Analyse the changes that can be implemented in the development of LAN to meet the future networking demands while discussing the different types of topologies.
d) Compare the Open System Interconnection (OSI) with Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) network layers model covering the functions of each layer and the roles of main protocols. Also, explain IEEE 802 networking standards & functions covering 802.3 (Ethernet) & 802.11 (Wireless).
LO2
PRD are often asked by clients to recommend new innovative solutions to some of the business problems they face. To show you have up-to-date networking knowledge,
a) List and discuss the operating principals of the hardware & software that can be used to design and implement a network.
b) Evaluate the factors that relate to making a decision on the different choice of hardware devises and software for the network design, cost & performance.
c) Explore the different range of server types and justify the selection of server considering the given scenario.
d) Identify the topology protocol selected for the efficient utilisation of a networking system considering the given scenario.
LO3
For a small business organisation, growth and success is considered as a major elements. There are several things that can enable in achieving efficient computer network. This has many benefits such as reducing unnecessary costs, raising your business outcome and increasing business efficiency.
a) Design the network system based on the scenario given above utilizing all the hardware and software selection of LO2.
b) Test and evaluate the design to meet the requirements and analyse user feedback.
c) Install and configure network services and applications of your choice. Also, design a maintenance schedule to support the networked system.
LO4
Documentation is essential in troubleshooting networks in an effective and efficient manner. Troubleshooting will save the organisation time and money on the other hand .Therefore, before a technician can troubleshoot a network, proper documentation should exist which will assist in finding the problem expeditiously.
a) Implement a network for a given scenario based on a prepared design.
b) Analyse test results against every configuration done in the network design.
c) Recommend potential enhancements for the designed network systems. And finally, use critical reflection to evaluate own work and justify valid conclusions.
