Purpose of this assignment

The purpose of this assignment it to enable students to demonstrate their understanding of the influence of culture, politics and power upon the behaviour of individuals across a variety of business situations.

The assignment is split into two parts:

Part 1 Organisational culture, politics and power and the Motivation of Individuals and Teams, within Ryanair
Part 2 Influences on team effectiveness and concepts and theories of organisational behaviour within Ryanair

Learning Outcome 1: Analyse the influence of culture, politics and power on the behaviour of others in an organisational context
Learning Outcome 2: Evaluate how to motivate individuals and teams to achieve a goal
Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate an understanding of how to cooperate effectively with others
Learning Outcome 4: Apply concepts and philosophies of organisational behaviour to a given business situation

Case scenario
Ryanair was set up in 1984. A major shift in strategy in the 1990s saw it establish itself as the first European airline to adopt a low fares, low cost approach. It receives extensive media coverage focusing on staffing issues and poor customer satisfaction ratings. Whilst acknowledged for his success in the growth and expansion of Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary is seen by many as the creator of a ‘macho' style of culture within the organisation. (Ryanair website). In addition to this, customer satisfaction levels remain poor - it was voted worst airline serving the UK, at the end of 2019, for the seventh year running (Newton, 2019, Mail on line). The organisation is also currently undergoing a re-structure, following a decline in performance (Waite, as cited by Morning Star, 2019).
Your role: You have been appointed to the role of Organisational Development Adviser to Ryanair.

PART 1 - Culture, Power and Politics and the Motivation of Individuals and Teams, within Ryanair
LO1 and LO2 (Approximately 1,750 words)
Write a report for your line manager, in which you:

1. Critically analyse how the organisational culture, politics and power in Ryanair have influenced individual and team behaviour and performance in the organisation.

2. Evaluate how content and process theories of motivation and motivational techniques enable effective achievement of goals in an organisational context and then develop this into a critical evaluation of how to influence the behaviour of others through the effective application of behavioural motivational theories, concepts and models.

3. Critically evaluate the relationship between culture, politics, power and motivation that enables teams and organisations to succeed, providing justified recommendations for Ryanair, to improve its overall company performance.

PART 2 - Influences on team effectiveness and concepts and theories of organisational behaviour within Ryanair
LO4 and part LO3 (for D2) (Approximately 1,750 words)

Ryanair is undergoing a corporate restructure, moving to a small senior management team overseeing four airline subsidiaries: Ryanair DAC; Laudamotion; Ryanair Sun; Ryanair UK. This will result in changes being made to functions and roles of teams within the organisation, as a whole and require the adoption of appropriate leadership styles and involvement of staff via effective communication, for its effective implementation.

Prepare a briefing paper for senior management, in which you:

1. Apply and evaluate how concepts and philosophies of inform organisational behaviour and influence behaviour within Ryanair, given the on-going re-structuring process.

2. Critically analyse and evaluate the relevance of team development theories, concepts and philosophies that influence behaviour in Ryanair to improve business performance and productivity what would make the teams at Ryanair more effective.
