Assignment : Mathematics, Mechanical Principles and Electronic Principles

You are a first year technical apprentice and you have been asked by your supervisor to contribute to the Design department of your engineering company a technical design report which involves calculations using the concepts learnt in the Mathematics, Mechanical Principles and Electrical Principles in producing an efficient product on the assembly line. You have been asked to produce your calculations in logical manner by showing all steps involved in the question and keep all answers to 3 significant figures with correct units in your design report.

The data for all the student specific values will be found at the Appendix section of this Assignment .Use your relevant student numbers to attempt the tasks and show you workings based on your student specific values.

Instructions
• Use black ink or a ball-point pen.
• Fill in the boxes at the top of this page with your name, and student id
• Answer all questions.

Information
• The total mark for this paper is 61 marks
• The marks for each question are shown in brackets
- use this as a guide as to how much time to spend on each question.
• You may use a non-programmable calculator that does not have the facility for symbolic algebraic manipulation or allow the storage and retrieval of mathematical formulae.

Advice
• Read each question carefully before you start to answer it.
• Try to answer every question.
• Check your answers if you have time at the end.

Section A: Applied Mathematics
Answer ALL questions.

Task 1
The volume of oil remaining in a storage tank is represented by the equation of a straight line:

V = a - b × t
Where t is the time in hours and V is the volume in litres.

Draw a straight line graph to represent the volume of oil remaining in the storage tank, between zero and four hours.

You should include the labels and axis values on your graph

Task 2 A Plasma cutter is used to produce parts for motorcycles.
The running cost of the plasma cutter is determined using the formula:

(4c - 2n) - 3(n - 2c) = c + n

Solve the equation to find the value of c when n = d

Task 3 The diagram shows a solid cylindrical roller that is manufactured from steel.

where ‘e' = Length of cylinder and ‘f'= diameter of cylinder Calculate the total surface area (TSA) of the solid cylindrical
roller.

Task 4a

Task 4b A milling machine depreciates due to wear and tear and this is represented by the formula:

d = ag ah where d is the depreciation and a is the age of the milling machine. The values of the powers are ‘g' and ‘h'

(a) Simplify the formula using one of the laws of indices.

(b) Calculate the value of d when a = ‘k'

Task 5 The diagram shows a component that is part of a circular guard for a portable power tool.
The component is shaded grey.

Where ‘m' = angle in degrees, and ‘n' and ‘p' = radii in mm

Calculate the area of the component?

Task 1(a)

Task 1(b) Section B: Mechanical Principles

Answer ALL questions.

The diagram shows a section of a gradually tapering circular pipe.

(a) Calculate the cross sectional area (A1) of the pipe inlet.

(b) Calculate the cross sectional area (A2) of the pipe outlet. Assume that the pipe is rigid and the fluid is incompressible.

Task 2 The diagram shows a connecting rod. The direct stress in the connecting rod is x N/mm2. The connecting rod extends by y m when it is subjected to a tensile load of 60 kN.

Calculate the Young's Modulus of the material used for the connecting rod. Give your answer in an appropriate unit.

Task 3 The diagram shows a drop hammer and spike. The y kg hammer is dropped onto the stationary z kg spike. The hammer remains in contact with the spike. The ground has a resistive force of x N. The spike is driven 0.15m into the ground.

Calculate the velocity of the hammer just before it makes contact with the spike.

Assume there are no energy losses from the collision between the hammer and the spike and from air friction.

Task 1 Section C: Electrical Principles

Answer ALL questions.

An (a) Volt battery is connected across a (b) ? Resistor. Calculate the power dissipated by the Resistor

Find your individual values for (a) and (b) in table 1

Task 2 The diagram shows two Charged conducting plates with a potential difference across them

Calculate the Electric Field Strength Between the two plates using the correct units

The plates are (d) mm apart

Use Table 1 to find your individual distance (d)

Task 3 Explain one advantage of using a Stabilised Power Supply when prototyping Electrical circuits

Task 4 An AC Single Phase power Supply has an RMS Input Voltage of V Volts

Calculate the peak voltage and calculate the Average Voltage of the Supply

Use Table 1 to find your individual Voltage (V)

Task 5
The current flowing in the Circuit below is 0.16A. Calculate the Frequency of the AC Supply
