Assignment Brief
Scenario:
You are currently employed at an organisation, Lighting Design Engineering Company (LDEC). This organization has designed many Lighting Plans/Layouts for both large and small commercial buildings throughout Trinidad and Tobago. The Managing Director of LDEC has recently received a request to start a Lighting Design project for a client who is constructing a new office building. As such the Manager has selected you to assist with this new Design project and has given you the following Design Brief:
Design Brief:
The Lighting Design for the newly constructed commercial building must be done in a manner that meets all the statutory requirements for design, ergonomic as well as be profitable in the current market. One of the rooms in the building is being used as an office space, 12ft x 12 ft where it is anticipated that the staff will be carrying out tasks such as reading, documenting and computing where their eyes can be put under strain.
Your Technical Design Report for this design must include the following and follow the template provided:
1. Produce a design specification detailing the various stages of the production of the Lighting Design Plan/ Layout from the given design brief scenario. (P1)
2. Explain the influence of this stakeholder's design brief and requirements in preparing your design specification. (P2)
3. Develop a Gantt chart and describe the use of this Gantt chart in the preparation of your design specification. (P3)
4. Recommend justified improvements for the completed design specification against the relevant industry standard specification. (D1)
5. Explore and use industry standard evaluation and analytical tools in your design process. (P4)
6. Discuss three conceptual designs via sketches and written report and discuss the role of conceptual designs in the design process. (P5)
7. Develop a prototype of your solution for the design scenario and illustrate the role of modelling and prototyping in your design. (M3)
8. Identify appropriate software and hardware recommended for problem solving and indicate how these can assist in the design process. (M4)
9. Identify and make recommend justified improvements for any problems/issues with your engineering design. (D2)
Develop an oral presentation for your engineering design that includes the following (date and time for presentation to be provided):
10. Present what planning techniques were used to come up with the design specification. (M1)
11. An assessment of the limitations of your presented design. (P7)
12. Explain the role of design specifications and standards in producing your finished product. (M5)
13. Identify compliance, safety and risk management issues present in your engineering design process. (M6)
14. Analyse the effectiveness of your peers engineering industry standard technical design report to produce a fully compliant finished product. (this will be done along with the presentations within 15mins) (D3)
15. Present the recommended design to the stakeholders (role of CEO of the organization to be acted by the Lecturer and role of the stakeholders to be acted by peers) within 15mins. (P8)
16. Explain the communication strategy and presentation method used to inform the stakeholders of the recommended solution. (P9)
17. From the stages required for producing your design, determine the critical path. Justify the use of critical path analysis in the preparation of the design process. (M2)
