Some contemporary counselors are taking a unique position with regard to termination. It goes something like this: If you have a life-long condition which comes and goes (exacerbates and remits), then you actively "treat" the condition during the peak times, and practice "prevention" when the condition wanes. Why not treat "counseling" in the same manner.

From this perspective, the counselor and client may meet regularly and often during the exacerbations of life's problems, and when life's struggles abate somewhat, the client and counselor may meet only once every several weeks or months. Thus, there is never any termination: the counseling relationship is ongoing across the lifespan. This is similar to a patient's relationship to their family physician.
