"We aim to include 132 adult patients diagnosed with moderate to severe (HDRS > 16) unipolar MDD without psychotic symptoms, with failed response to at least two treatment trials with adequately dosed antidepressants and a current episode of less than 2 years. Exclusion criteria are: lifetime diagnosis of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder; current diagnosis of substance abuse disorder or organic brain syndrome; the presence of a concurrent significant medical condition impeding the ability to participate; previous treatment with rTMS or ECT; epilepsy, convulsion or seizure; serious head trauma or brain surgery; large or ferromagnetic metal parts in the head (except for a dental wire); implanted cardiac pacemaker or neurostimulator; or pregnancy. A subset of 92 patients will be part of the extended follow-up up to 12 month.
