Surgeons have become very proficient at organ transplant surgery, and the development of new drugs to reduce the chance that the transplanted organ will be rejected by the recipent have greatly increased the success rate for such procedures. Yet every day several hundred people die in this country while waiting for an organ transplant. The problem is the lack of organs available for transplantation. Right now patients are placed on waiting lists based, at least in theory, on how critical their need is. Available organs are assigned either on a state-by-state basis or regionally.
1. Should we have a uniform national policy for assigning organs?
2. Should organs be available nationwide, so that an available heart, let's say, from Massachusetts could be transplanted into a patient in New Mexico if that patient's need is more critical than a patient in Massachusetts ?
3. Keep in mind that the length of time an organ is out of the body affects, to some extent, the success of the transplantation.
4. What could we do in our country to increase the number of available organs? How do other countries allocate organs ?
