Please discuss which of the following strategies you might consider trying (and why!) in helping a child who is having difficulty (demonstrated by upset, clinging, loud crying) with departure and separation from parents in a childcare program. 

According to the article Understanding Temperament in Infants and Toddlers

• Ignore the problem. Children always show distress and anxiety when leaving their parents.
• Take the child firmly from the parent's arms upon arrival. Hold the child tightly so she cannot get away and run after the departing parent.
• Have a parent bring the child to the program early and play with the child with toys in the classroom. Once the child is involved in play, encourage the mother to say goodbye and leave.
• Have a parent accompany the child to the program and stay with her for several full days, until the child is comfortable.
• Give the child extra nurturance. Respond quickly to her needs. Try to help the child to become attached to you as a new caregiver.
• Have a child bring a stuffed toy or a photo of her family to the program on the first day.
• Have the father bring the child to the program for the first week.
• Encourage the mother to show no ambivalence herself in saying goodbye.
• Ignore the child's crying. When s/he stops, give lots of warmth and attention.
• Have a parent go all around the room with a child on the first day and point out exciting toys and materials. Instruct the parent not to play with the child, though, and to say a quick goodbye once the child is engaged.
• Encourage the parents to withdraw the child from the center and arrange for relatives or a family child care provider to care for him.
