The 2nd article in this week's list provides an overview of approaches to understanding organizations-individual, groups within the organization, and the larger entity or whole organization. At the individual level, concepts start to appear explaining why certain personalities seem to "fit" particular industries. For example, people who can easily manage details of projects often find themselves confident in more structured organizations such as government agencies. At the group level, ideas being to surface about the role of competition between various work projects and strategies. For instance, competition often translates into conflicts between work groups for budget resources. At the larger organizational level, thoughts can surface on why one company seems to do better than another. An example might be why Apple has captured a large part of the market and Samsung seems to have a 2ndary role. 

Each emphasis-individual, group, or total organization can impact your professional strategy for advancement. But often, most of the time, people don't think about organizational behaviors and their professional options.

Let's use work-related experiences to see more of the organizational behavior strategies at play. Note: The 3rd article in the week's list emphasizes mechanical organizations. Many people taking 630 have significant experience in government and or military, which are more mechanical or bureaucratic. Reading the article can help you think in greater detail about a highly structured work setting.

WHAT TO DO:

Develop a paper using your work experience-this example can include volunteer work, internships, as well as longer-term professional employment. 

When you recall this example, do you see the experience as successful? Why? 

Based on your sense of being successful, what did the supervisor do, or the work place emphasize that made you sense your success? Build your post by expanding your thoughts using the questions listed here. Aim to be descriptive. 

As you think about a work experience, you may also recall work that was not successful-you wanted "out".  Less successful experiences have an important role and you can also describe that example in this posting. What was troubling or confusing about the experience? What seemed to surprise you? What were the reasons you believed you were not allowed to perform at a level you desired? Build your post by expanding your thoughts using the questions listed here. Aim to be descriptive.
