Assignment Task: The Festival of Biomes/Ecosystems
Your will be researching a world biome in order to develop a further understanding of threats to biodiversity and ecological issues and principles influencing the biome. Below is a list of the information you MUST research about your biome for the Festival of Biomes:
1. WORLD MAP:
(Create Google Slides)
For this section find a world map that shows the locations of your biome.
2. POPULATION/BIODIVERSITY RESEARCH:
(Create Google Slides)
For this section of the project your group will research various plants and animals that currently inhabit the biome as well as endangered or threatened species in the biome.
- 10 animals currently living in the biome - include pictures, common name/scientific name
- 10 plants currently living in the biome - include pictures & common name/scientific name
- 3 Endangered/threatened species - include pictures and a brief description of why the species has become endangered and what is being done to help the species.
3. ECOLOGICAL PRINCIPLES RESEARCH:
(Create Google Slides)
- Find 1 example of each type of symbiotic relationship (mutualism, commensalism, & parasitism) in your biome. Include a picture & explanation of the relationship
- Find a chart/graph of average yearly/monthly precipitation
- Find a chart/graph of average yearly temperature ranges
4. FOOD RESEARCH:
(Create Google Slides)
Humans find plant and animals as food sources in every biome on Earth.
- Create a list of 10 food sources humans harvest/hunt in the biome - include pictures .
5. THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY RESEARCH
(Create Google Slides)
For this section of the project your group will research various threats to biodiversity currently occurring in the biome.
1. HABITAT LOSS: Research and describe 1 example of natural habitat destruction occurring in the biome. This should consist of at least 1 detailed paragraph of information.
- Things to consider while researching: How is the habitat being reduced? How quickly is the habitat disappearing? Why is the habitat being destroyed? What are humans gaining by destroying the habitat? What animals are most affected?
- Include before/after pictures of the habitat
2. OVEREXPLOITATION: Research and describe 1 example of overexploitation occurring in the biome. This should consist of at least 1 detailed paragraph of information.
- Things to consider while researching: Why is this animal being exploited - what is valuable about the animal? How has the overexploitation affected the population of the animal -by what percentage has it dropped?
- Include 2 pictures of overexploited animals
- Include 2 pictures of the actual exploitation
3. ALIEN/INVASIVE SPECIES: Research and describe 1 alien/invasive species currently causing problems in the biome. This should consist of at least 1 detailed paragraph of information.
Include the following information in your presentation:
- Name of the species
- Picture of the species
- How did the species get to the biome?
- What problems are being caused by the presence of the species?
- What efforts are being utilized to stop the spread/control the population?
4. CLIMATE CHANGE: Research and describe 1 severe/extreme weather event that has happened in the biome within the last 10 years.
- This to consider while researching: What was the location of this event? How much more severe was it compared to past events? How much damage occurred - how many building destroyed, what was the cost of destruction, etc....
- Include 2 pictures of severe weather events in your biome.
- 2 Pictures of before and after the severe weather event.
