COMP1001 Data Communications and Networks
Executive Summary
Provide a short summary (1-page max) of what contains in this report and how this report helps you learn computer networking.
R1: Network Topology
In this section, you will draw the physical and logical topology of your home network. You will demonstrate your understanding of the difference between physical and logical topologies as well as the types of information should be provided for each topology type.
R2: Network Devices
In this section you will identify and provide details of all devices participating in your home network including their model, technical specification, physical network interfaces and real pictures. Your will demonstrate your understanding of network device types and functionality by classifying identified devices to the right class and briefly explain each device functionality.
R3: Data Communication Technologies and Standards
In this section, you will identify and provide details of all data communication technologies used by your home network. Your will demonstrate your understanding of the data communication technologies by providing the key technical specification and corresponding standard of each identified technology and explain brieflythe working mechanisms, advantages and limitations of the technology.
R4: Addressing Schemes
In this section, you will identify and provide details of the addressing schemes of your home network including physical and logical addresses. Your will demonstrate your understanding of the network addressing schemes by obtaining the physical and logical addresses of all devices in your network. From the obtained addresses, you will work out the hardware manufacture of each NIC, the IPv4 and IPv6 network addresses, broadcast addresses and default gateway addresses. You will also workout the subnet masks and the number of available IPv4/IPv6 addresses in your home network.
R5: Network Protocols
In this section, you will identify and provide details of network protocols operating in your home network. You will use Wireshark network analyser to capture network traffics crossing the NIC of your laptop or PC in 2-3 minutes. During the capturing time, open your web browser and access SCU website. Also send an email to your SCU email address from your email client software. Stop capturing and save the captured trace to A2.pcap and analyse it. You will demonstrate your understanding of the TCP/IP protocol suite by identifying and classifying the protocols found in your captured file into appropriate layers of the TCP/IP model. Next, find the frames that show a TCP handshake process and report the following:
• The IP address of the sender and receiver.
• The TCP port of the sender and TCP port at the receiver side.
• The TCP flags, sequence numbers and acknowledgement numbers
• Take screen short and provide explanation to support your information.
Next, find the frames that capture your access to the SCU webpage and report the following:
• The IP address of the SCU webserver.
• The protocol and method used to access the SCU front page.
• Take screen short and provide explanation to support your information
Finally, find the frames that capture the email conversation and report the following:
• The IP address of the mail server.
• The protocol and command used to begin the conversation with the mail server.
• Take screen short and provide explanation to support your information.
R6: Network Services
In this section, you will identify and provide details of the following network services:
• DHCP service
o Your DHCP server address
o IP address scope
• DNS service
o Your DNS Server IP address(es)
o Your domain name(s).
Your will demonstrate your understanding of the services by providing the details of the services as requested.
R7: Network Security
In this section, you will identify and provide details of any network security measures employed by your home network. Your will demonstrate your understanding of the network security by providing a brief discussion on the top threesecurity threats and attacks that your home network may face.
R8: Performance Parameters
In this section, you will provide details of the following performance parameters of your home network:
• Wi-Fi coverage: Wi-Fi channel and the signal strength in dB from different room of your house. Report any location in your house where the Wi-Fi is not reliable and discuss possible causes. You can use free Wi-Fi analyser tool for the task.
• Network bandwidth to the Internet. You will measure the bandwidth at 9am and at 9pm and report the figure. You can use a free speed test tool for the task. Discuss any difference and possible causes.
• End-to-end delay from your PC to several locations on the Internet including your ISP, SCU webserver and Google webserver. Like bandwidth, measure the delays at 9am and 9pm report the figure. Discuss any difference and possible causes.
• Support your information with appropriate explanation and screen shots.
Discussion
In this section, you argue the role of computer networks in your life and study. Support your discussion with realevidences (250 words max).
