Learning Outcome 1: Demonstrate understanding and practice of scientific method.

Learning Outcome 2: Develop the ability to analyse, interpret and record experimental data as appropriate for the wider research context

Learning Outcome 3: Establish a collection of evidence to demonstrate understanding of integrity and competency in science.

Assignment A: Laboratory notebook

This task will assess your ability to problem solve and effectively document methods, protocols and results within the practical environment and will be assessed through accurate recording and analysis of laboratory sessions. The laboratory notebook will document problem solving activities and its outputs which conforms to the principles of good laboratory practice (GLP). You will undertake scenarios under demonstrator supervision to obtain experimental results which you then interpret and produce detailed laboratory note books. Taught sessions will develop key statistical and analysis skills needed to interpret data. Tutorial and workshop sessions will support you with this task which will help your ability to both accurately record experimental progress and help plan your future experimental approach. The laboratory note books generated through this process will be assessed for accurate record keeping and data analysis. You are encouraged to complete lab notes for all laboratory sessions, but can select 2 lab session lab book notes to submit for assessment.

Assignment B: Laboratory Practice Record:

You will be expected to complete an online collection of evidence (portfolio) documenting engagement with module content through the completing of course-specific tasks relating to good laboratory practice and competence in science. To demonstrate this you will be expected to maintain this portfolio throughout the semester as a complete record of your engagement with the module and utilise the reflective elements to guide your future practice. Each laboratory practice record will be different and should reflect your individual achievement, reflections on this and plans for your future development.

Theelectronic portfolio will be collected using pebble pad which will be composed of a number of well organised sectionsincluding clearly articulated evidence of activities performed during the module and evidence of reflective practice on each of the tasks.
