Mr Jedda is a 50-year-old Indigenous man with a 5-year history of poorly controlled type II diabetes mellitus. He was admitted to hospital 2 months ago with a non-healing diabetic foot ulcer resulting in below knee amputation of his left leg. The physician has requested that home health care services are arranged to assist in managing Mr Jedda's diabetes and ongoing care of his amputated left leg following discharge
Mr Jedda is showing signs of depression and doesn't care about his diabetes and amputated left leg. To promote Mr Jedda's self-management of condition and address his psychological issues, the EN wants to evaluate Mr Jedda's understanding of the diabetes condition, medications, therapeutic regimes and self-management, and provides him with a person centered, culturally safe and appropriate care including making referrals to other interdisciplinary teams and community resources.
1. State three kinds of questions that the EN can ask to evaluate Mr Jedda's understanding of diabetes condition and management.
2. State at least four interventions that the EN would undertake to provide Mr Jedda with culturally safe care, promote his self-management of condition and address the psychological issues.
3. Discuss at least five potential environmental and social factors contributing to Mr Jedda's diabetes (refer to the information in the scenario and the environmental and social factors contributing diabetes among general Australian and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people).
