Research Paper ASSESSMENT
PURPOSE
This assignment aims to enhance student's research and referencing skills whilst gaining an understanding of contemporary theory in relation to the planning and development profession.
TOPIC
Students are to write a paper relating to one of the following planning and development related topics.
Topic Options
• Review of Queensland Planning Controls (Legislation and Policy)
o Sustainable development outcomes encouraged through the Gold Coast Planning Scheme
o Queensland planning legislation review in achieving sustainable development practices.
o Review of planning legislation in a city of your choice regarding its ability to address sustainable development.
• (or) Topic of your choice - must be urban planning related and approved by the lecturer via email.
REPORT STRUCTURE
You should frame the report as a research paper and must:
• Formulate a specific focus in which to relate your topic to (ie How does planning as a profession relate to the development industry?)
• Provide a detailed review of the topic through the use of a variety of reputable and academic sources (ie references) such as journal articles, text books, professional publications, newspaper articles, etc. The use of non-academic or reputable websites such as Wikipedia, etc, are not to be utilised as a reference source. The use of internet-based research material is to be drawn upon from peer review published works or hard copy material from a relevant source such as the library.
• Clearly define the scope of the assessment (eg what you will and will not cover in the report)
• Justify your findings through the inclusion of analytical discussion.
• Provide a clear structure and layout for the paper. For example:
o Introduction
o Aim/Purpose
o Methodology
o Content, Findings & Analytical Discussion
o Conclusion
o References
Note: You are not restricted to the above suggested structure. Other suitable headings are also encouraged to be included in the paper.
Options for writing paper
• Choose a city, part of city, or development project of your choice and discuss the key planning ideas, issues.
o Review planning ideas/principles of city of your choice (look at strategic plans of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Mumbai, Delhi, Beijing, Shanghai) or
o Review planning initiatives for part of city (such as Southport priority development areas, Urban renewal area) or
o Review major development project (such as Queens Wharf, Brisbane, Light Rail,
Gold Coast) or
o Review planning for large scale development or master-planned communities (Varsity Lakes, Robina, Springfield, Emerald Lakes etc) or
o Other topic of your interest (such as comparing planning systems, planning laws in different countries/states, sustainability initiatives in cities)
• Discuss your topic with the lecturer in class.
Indicative outline of paper
(outline may change slightly depending on your topic)
1. Introduction and objective of paper
2. Understanding the city/project
a. Key information about the city/project (for example demography/economy of city, type of project)
b. Land use, built form, public realm, transport/walkability
3. Critical review
a. Key planning principles, consultation processes, assessment processes where relevant
b. Positive and negative aspects of the plans/projects
c. Key planning issues
d. Learning from the plans/projects
4. Conclusion
5. References
BRIEF SEMINAR -
Brief oral presentation about 4 minutes time
Highlight the key ideas from the paper (to share with the class - no need to go into details due to limitation of time and class size)
Just use about 4 slides to highlight the key ideas of the city/project
RESEARCH PAPER
Paper length about 2,500 words
Include relevant maps/photographs as part of the paper
