Exercise 6.1: Understanding Job Design 

Objective 

The purpose of this exercise is to gain a greater appreciation of job design.

Instructions 

In groups of two to three, attempt to improve the overall job design of the following jobs. For each job title, decide whether you would use job rotation, job enlargement, job enrichment, or a combination of these. Explain how you would implement each form of job design. 

University president 

Cashier at a fast food restaurant 

Janitor 

President of a major corporation 

College professor.

Reflection Questions 

1. What challenges did you have in enhancing the overall job design of each job? How did you overcome those challenges? 

2. Which was the most difficult job to enhance job design? Explain. 

3. Which was the easiest job to enhance job design? Explain. 

4. Choose a job you have held either in the past or currently. If your supervisor gave you permission to enhance the job design of that job in any way you wanted, how would you change the job through effective job design? 

5. Why do managers attempt to improve job design in the workplace? What benefit do the managers receive from this?
