Understanding Ionic and Covalent Compounds
Chapter 4 teaches us about how elements combine to form compounds. There are two main types of bonds that occur between elements. An ionic bond generally occurs between a metal and a nonmetal and involves the transfer of one or more electrons. A covalent bond generally occurs between two nonmetals and involves the sharing of electrons.
There are numerous online sources that can help us learn about chemistry. For example, simply going on YouTube you can find numerous videos that explain topics in chemistry. These videos are of different length and quality, but it is useful for college students to know about alternate resources to learn high level material.
In this activity you will learn to search for video clips on ionic and covalent bonds. After viewing the clips, you will compare and contrast the videos. As I said, some resources are better than others, so it is okay to be critical.
1. Go to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/
2. In the search bar, type in ionic and covalent bonding
3. Choose a video to watch. For the video record the following:
a. Title, Source (listed right under the title), and duration.
b. Something new that you learned about bonding.
c. Give your opinion on the overall usefulness of this video.
4. Choose another video to watch on the same topic. For the video record the following:
a. Title, Source (listed right under the title), and duration.
b. Something new that you learned about bonding.
c. Give your opinion on the overall usefulness of this video.
5. Which video did you prefer and why?
