Question

My group is focusing on how bedside shift reports help patients better understand their diagnoses and improve patient outcomes. According to Forde et al. (2020), a bedside shift report is a method of clinical handover where patient information and a plan for their care are given in front of the patient (Forde et al., 2020). The study I found used purposeful sampling to collect data (Forde et al., 2020). The night shift nurse did a demographic survey of the patients on the floor; there were also two observational schedules completed, one for the day shift and one for the night shift (Forde et al., 2020). One limitation found in this study is that there was not much patient engagement (Forde et al., 2020). Another limitation was the use of medical jargon. Many patients reported that even though the report took place in front of them, a lot of medical jargon was used, making the information challenging for the patients to understand (Forde et al., 2020). This study was beneficial for me to look at because it gave me ideas on what can be done better when implementing bedside shift reports.
