Overview
A Think Piece (TP) is commonly defined as "a piece of writing meant to be thought-provoking and speculative that consists chiefly of background material and personal opinion and analysis." The TP-usually published online in publicly accessible venues-is one of the most common genres circulated in public conversations, and we've read several examples of Think Pieces in this unit (Teller, Hesse, Selingo). TPs share similarities with such genres as the advice column, blog post, or op-ed (opinion-editorial), although each of these genres has its own unique characteristics in style, organization, and use of sources.
Writing Your Own Think Piece
Having read Teller, Hesse, and Selingo, you are now an expert reader of Think Pieces on a particular topic (college writing instruction). Next, you will become an informed writer of a TP that addresses a topic of your choosing. Your goal is to compose a Think Piece in a similar style to Teller, Hesse, and Selingo. That is, in the TP you write, respond directly to an ongoing conversation on a timely public topic that you find interesting and relatable. It's your turn to say what you think about a subject or debate-and why. In your TP, you will incorporate rhetorical strategies and features appropriate to this genre.
Required Steps/Parts of This Assignment
This project has several steps and/or parts, spread over time so that you can work on them inside and outside of class. If you like, use the following as a checklist:
Writing Inventory
Genre Features Chart (for each sample TP read/ discussed)
Guidelines: Choosing a Topic
I selected the first three Think Pieces on a particular topic (college writing instruction) because I'm personally interested in, have some experience with, and want to share ideas and opinions about that topic with a specific audience (ENG 1023 students and writing teachers at TWU). Your job is to do the same thing: identify a timely, public topic that people are talking about and about which you already know a little bit; do some additional reading about the topic to inform yourself; and share your ideas with a specific audience.
What to Expect
This assignment should help you better understand the Think Piece genre that has become so common in recent years. After you've completed this assignment, you'll be better prepared to critically analyze and evaluate similar genres that you encounter in your everyday life.
