Assessment - Pedagogical Inquiry
Learning outcome 1: Identify learning opportunities in play
Learning outcome 2: Understand the importance of play as a human activity and in early childhood
Learning outcome 3: Understand the role of the teacher with particular emphasis on interactions with children and intentional teaching
Assessment Structure
This consists of two sections:
Part A - Introduce the relationship between play and learning, and describe an observed practice - WHO, WHERE, WHEN, WHAT and HOW a child engages in play
Part B - An analysis of the pedagogical significance of the observation in connection with ideas covered in Sessions 1 - 6
Section A: Description of the Observed Practice
You MUST write about ONE pre-recorded play event listed
A written introduction that establishes the relationship between play and learning (referencing Session 1)
A written description of an observed play event in the Early Years, which may focus on an observed play activity.
Section B: Pedagogical Inquiry
Reflect on the pedagogical significance of your described play event to discuss the following:
Type(s) of play (referencing Session 4)
Stage(s) of play (referencing Session 5)
Domain(s) of development (referencing Session 2)
Facilitation of play (referencing Session 6)
Play and identity formation (referencing Session 3)
The above order is highly recommended to increase the logical flow of your responses but not mandated. It is also highly advised that you organise your responses into logical paragraphs using these sub-sections for readability.
Instructions
Create a new Word document with two sections: (1) The Observed Practice, and (2) Pedagogical Inquiry) (Use headings!)
Refer to the Paper Setup Guide and Checklist to assist you with preparing and formatting your document for submission.
Choose a video from the Assessment 2 Video List that shows a child or children engaged in play.
Revisit the unit readings from Sessions 1- 6 and pull out significant definitions and ideas.
Reflect by connecting the observed practice with these definitions and ideas.
Include a reference list formatted according to APA 7th Referencing style.
You must write this submission in academic prose. Please do not use dot points.
Word count limit is enforced. Your submission will not be assessed beyond the absolute limit of more than 10% above the stated word count.
References in the reference list DO NOT add to the word count.
You must use the APA 7th style of referencing.
