Assessment Details and Instructions

The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate advanced skills in the development and interpretation of demographic profiling including the application of economic indicators to understand local community profiles and needs.

This includes:

Identification of the local government area where you live and description of the geographic area this covers, the local economy, the composition of the local council and details on when and where the local council meets [if you are not currently resident in Australia your teacher will nominate an area for you to profile]

Four socio-demographic profiles that show the population density and key social indicators of people in the Local Government Area where you live.

A short summary (250 words) that outlines key social demographics profiles of people living in the area compared to the capital city in the state you live. The purpose of this is to provide you with a benchmark against which you will be able to describe any population groups likely to be experiencing disadvantage.

Key Resources

Community Profile, Social Atlas and Economic Profile on your local government website at https://profile.id.com.au/.To do this you need to go to the Community Profile, Social Atlas and Economic Profile, find the relevant information listed below, and copy each into a word document. Each should have a drop-down menu that shows you these maps.

Key Tasks

Identify the local government area where you live and describe the geographic area this covers, the local economy, the composition of the local council and details on when and where the local council meets
Create data profiles

Using the data, tables and maps provided in profile.id.com.au create the following series of four local area maps and corresponding statistics that show:

Create a table that shows the population age ranges in your local area
Create a table that shows the ethnic and/or language spoken at home in your local area
Create a table or diagram that illustrates households in rental stress (all ages) in your local area
Create a table or diagram that illustrates the unemployment rate, including by age, in your local area

Interpret these profiles to provide a short description and analysis of current population

Based on what you observe from the data you have developed in tasks 1 and 2 and from information obtained elsewhere in the community profile, provide written answers to the following four questions about people in your area, using data to support your answers:

What are the key elements that define the population profile of your area? In your response describe key social demographics including the major age profiles, ethnicities, language spoken at home and disability.

What is the economic profile of your area, including key businesses and employment? Is there any indication of economic or employment disadvantage in your community?

What is the housing profile in your area? What are the typical dwellings? Do any parts of your community experience rental stress? If so, where in the community is this?

What demographic information in your area would also be relevant to determining the needs of people in your area? List at least two other factors that are important and include statistics, maps or tables to justify this. For instance, compared to the general population, does your area have: a high number of people who speak a language other than English at home; significant numbers of people from ethnic or indigenous background; low levels of income; lengthy travel times to work (journey to work); or a high overall SEIFA [Socio-Economic Index For Areas] disadvantage?

Students will use the following framework as a guide to complete the Profile Report:

Own local government area is identified, and key local geographic and business/economic factors are described. Local councillors are identified and location and meeting times for council meetings are identified.

Accurate local demographic data is selected, summarised and presented in tables, enabling a socio-demographic profile of area to be completed that includes local age profile, rental stress, unemployment rates and key languages spoke at home.

Based on this profile a description of the likely range of needs of different people in the community is made.

Appropriate reporting language is used in report including correct citation of data and other statistics using APA (7th edition) referencing style.
You will be assessed on:

Relevance of answer to questions.
Accuracy and clarity of presentation of socio-demographic data.
Clarity of analysis of disadvantage and need in your local government area based on demographic information.
