Objectives:

1. To provide an opportunity to gain advance modelling skills in producing domain specific and collaborative project models and documents.

2. To provide a critical understanding of BIM modelling and the process of escalating from 3D to computable nD models.

3. To deliver an appreciation of a variety of BIM and CAD in order to develop interoperability, data sharing, and merging skills.

4. To provide an understanding of planning, programming, monitoring, and controlling resources of construction projects with the use of current computer technology.

5. To provide an introduction to the fundamental legal implications for data sharing, national industry standards, and UK 'standards' related to BIM.

Task:

Learning outcome 4: Demonstrate a critical understanding of a variety of BIM and CAD packages in order to develop interoperability, data sharing, and merging skills, and production of Gantt charts produced and link them to individual components of the BIM model to support BIM nD modelling

Question 1

Use Navisworks to combine 3D models from cross disciplines (provided on moodle) into one scene, i.e. architectural, structural, and MEP. Use this to generate visual project model reviews, construction simulations of project models to check the validity of schedules, interactive animations using the Animator and Scripter features, add true-to-life materials, lighting and backgrounds to project models using the Presenter, and identify and report clashes and interferences using Navisworks Clash detection.

One of the several benefits of BIM to the quantity surveyor/project manager is the ease of building measurement. Using current technology a QS/ project manager can generate a Bill of Quantities from a BIM model with few clicks of a mouse button.
You have been given the BIM model (on moodle) by an architect. Using Exactal CostX prepare a Bill of Quantities for the project. The bill should be priced for internal cost checking purposes. Your bill of quantities should include the following only:
• Structural framing (foundation, columns, beams and floors)
• Masonry works (if any)
• Floor wall and ceiling finishes

Question 3

Develop a WBS (work breakdown structure) for the project described above. One of the items of the WBS must be "Substructure Works". Prepare a detailed schedule (plan of works) comprising approximately 40-50 activities using Synchro Pro. Using Synchro Pro and the model provided for you on moodle, prepare 4D schedule of the project.

Note the following:

• Start date for the project is 17th February, 2020.
• The activities in this detailed plan must represent all work involved in constructing the building.
• Each activity should show at least its name, start date and finish date
• The activities must be arranged appropriately within the WBS.
• The activities should all have reasonable durations assigned.
• All subcontracted work (if any) should be represented on this detailed plan.
• All activities in this detailed plan should be at a similar level of detail, including the activities of the subcontractors (if any).
