Question

This study compared relapse rates for typhoid fever using two different types of treatment. By the time this study began, there had been numerous studies showing that chloramphenicol was an effective treatment for typhoid fever. This study took place with 408 poor patients receiving free care. Of 251 who were treated with chloramphenicol, 7.97% died. The other 157 patients received palliative, symptomatic care, but were not given chloramphenicol. Of these patients, 22.9% died.
