Assignment:

"Researchers first discovered HIV in old blood samples, the sample dates as far back as 1959 and was from a man that was living in what is present day the Democratic Republic of the Congo. HIV was first detected in the United States as early as 1979 but that is just the first documented case. HIV, AIDS, and some forms of cancer are from a family of viruses that are grouped together based on how they are structured and how they replicate, these viruses are called retroviruses. Retroviruses are viruses that use RNA as its genomic material. Upon infection with a retrovirus, a cell converts the retrovirol RNA into DNA, which in turn is then inserted into the DNA of the host cell. The cell then produces more retroviruses, which infect other cells

HIV was detected when Carlos took a saliva test at an AIDS awareness clinic at his community college.

There are three types of tests used to diagnose HIV infection: Antibody tests, antigen/antibody tests, & nucleic acid tests(NAC).

Antibody test check for HIV antibodies in blood or oral fluid.

Antibody/antigen tests can detect both HIV antibodies and HIV antigens (a part of the virus) in the blood.
