As a manager or HR manager, how many days of bereavement leave would you provide for employees when a loved one passes away? Some people worry that employees will lie about bereavement, leaving employers to write strict policies. After a death in the family, I once heard from a family member, "my mother received 4 days leave, I received 3 days leave, and my spouse only got 2 days leave and he had to show a copy of the obituary." At one point in my career, I missed a family member's funeral because I couldn't even imagine how I could get coverage that would allow me to take time off. How do you think these types of policies and situations make employees feel? If given the option, how would you design a bereavement policy pertaining to time off?
