Nonverbal Communication

Although much of nonverbal communication is universal, many nonverbal actions are shaped by culture. Nonverbal messages can convey internal states, create identity, regulate interaction, and substitute for words. In Chapter 9 of the text, the authors discuss classifications of nonverbal communication and identify how nonverbal cues may differ from culture to culture.

Choose three different types of nonverbal communication and discuss how they differ between cultures. Also address the following questions:

How might a dominant culture misconstrue nonverbal cues of a minority culture? Give at least three examples.
How would the authors' suggestions for developing nonverbal competencies in a diverse society help remedy the obstacles identified in your examples?
