A microbiologist is studying four different patient samples & needs to ID the types of microbe involved - not the causative agents. Use the information provided in the following cases to determine microbial type (each sample is a different microbe). What details led to your preliminary ID.

  • Intracellular pathogen surrounded by a protein coat that contains only RNA.
  • Rod-like pathogen with a glycoprotein covering, but no defined nucleus.
  • Flagellated multicellular organism with chloroplasts.
  • Cluster of cells with branching filaments & distinct cell walls/nuclear regions.
  • Neural tissue appears "spongy" with no culturable microbes identified.
