Types of Intellectual Property and Their Protections

Today's legally astute managers recognize the need to protect their rights in intellectual property. Intellectual property is any property resulting from intellectual, creative processes-the products of an individual's mind. The information contained in books and computer files is intellectual property. The software you use, the movies you watch, and the music you listen to are all forms of intellectual property.

There are four basic types of intellectual property:

• Patents

• Copyrights

• Trademarks

• Trade secrets

Different types of intellectual property are protected in different ways and the protections apply to different aspects of a product.

You need to make a presentation on intellectual property to your company. Prepare a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation covering the following issues:

• The various types of patents, patent infringements, and defenses to a patent infringement case

• Copyright ownership, infringement, and defenses to a copyright infringement case

• Trademark ownership, infringement, and defenses to a trademark infringement case

• Trade secret scope of protection and remedies for trade secret misappropriation

• An example of each type of intellectual property
