Assignment:
Please watch the "Extreme Brat Camp" movie and answer the questions below.
1. Do you believe these types of extreme behavioral change programs meet the ethical standard of not being "cruel and unusual punishment?" Why or why not?
2. Do you believe that these programs are inherently abusive? (For example, one red flag for me is yelling at a child and telling him how bad he is given that it's quite likely this is this negative messaging he receives in his home and school environment, and which is likely contributing to his continued acting out.)
3. Do these programs appear equally appropriate across both sexes? What about particular ages of the participants - should there be age restrictions and if so, what would they be? What about particular diagnostic categories of children - are these programs suitable for children with any psychological diagnosis or would some diagnoses render these programs harmful?
4. What is your thought regarding parental participation in the programs? Should they be involved? Why or why not? If yes, then in what capacity?
5. Which is more effective for children displaying these types of behaviors -- punishment or positive reinforcement? Can we even generalize to formulate this conclusion? Explain.
6. Would you consider sending a loved one to a camp such as this? Why or why not?
7. Are there safeguards that could be put in place to increase the safety of these types of programs?
