Type of jobs in the building industry
Through analysing different websites, it is clear that there are a lot of different jobs in the building industry and different courses available to get into these careers. This is highlighted in the following quote from the TAFEwebsite; "The building, construction and furnishing industries offer many career opportunities including self-employment and small-business development for workers with trade certificates. A significant new trend in these sectors is emerging technologies to challenge traditional methods. TAFE SA qualifications in these areas can lead to careers in many specialised building trades working on new and existing buildings. Graduates are able to pursue employment as sub-contractors, project builders, Work supervisors, designers and estimators." From comparing the Coursesavailable I decided to focus on exploring bricklaying and plumbing as I have had some experience of each through my doorways to construction course and feel that they suit my needs.
Comparison-bricklaying to plumbing
Prior to starting this research, there were two career options that I was interested in and therefore I decided to compare and contrast the main consideration involved in becoming a bricklayer and plumber.Findings could be discussed below
Types of work-role/duties performed
Firstly, Findings from secondary research suggest that the main role of a bricklayer is to lay bricks, concrete block and building blocks in mortar to construct and patch-up inner and outer walls and sometimes build in door and window frames. Bricklayers normally work outside and they do have to work with height sometimes. They usually work in team environment.
In comparison, findings suggest that plumbers work with gas which involves mounting and repairing heating and ventilation systems. General plumbers do a lot different work like drainage, metal roofing and gas fitting and they can also perform this other tasks like prepare or study plans and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems and materials needed
Training and qualifications
Currently, school based apprenticeships to student in various trades such as bricklaying. Am currently completing certificate two in bricklaying along with achieving my SACE however to be recognized as a qualified bricklayer u need to complete your certificate III in bricklaying you usually have to complete and apprenticeship in Bricklaying/Block laying.
Through conducting web based research into the training and qualification required I discover that they are similar to becoming a plumber as you usually have to complete an apprenticeship and gain a Certificate III in Plumbing if completing this course learners wi
