Oncogenes Oncogenes are cancer-causing mutant alleles. Normally a proto-oncogene will perform a role in signal transduction which is needed for normal cell proliferation. However, proto-oncogenes can be mutated into oncogenes. All of these mutations have some type of gain-of-function dominant effect.
