From the beginning of written history, humankind has recorded courageous acts of individuals. A story of particular interest to people in Alabama is how the now deceased Alabama native and Butler High School graduate Mike Christian, a Vietnam Prisoner of War (POW) for six years, found scraps of fabric and sewed them together to make a small U.S. flag. The flag was used by the POWs when reciting the (forbidden) pledge of allegiance.  When his Vietnamese captors discovered the first flag, Christian was beaten mercilessly.  John McCain, 2008 presidential candidate, who was Christian's cell mate for a short period of time, stated that Christian immediately began the construction of a second flag which the group used in continuing pledges of allegiance. McCain characterized Christian as one of the bravest men he had ever known.
