1. Complete the following exercises. In each case locate the state on sketches of theT-y and p-y diagrams.

(a) Four kg of water at 100°C fill a closed container having a volume of 1 m3. If the water at this state is a vapor, determine the pressure, in bar. If the water is a two-phase liquid-vapor mixture, determine the quality.

(b) Ammonia at a pressure of 40 lbf/in.2 has a specific internal energy of 308.75 Btu/lb. Determine the specific volume at the state, in ft3/lb.

2. Two kg of a two-phase, liquid-vapor mixture of carbon dioxide (CO2) exists at 240°C in a 0.05 m3 tank. Determine the quality of the mixture, if the values of specific volume for saturated liquid and saturated vapor CO2 at 240°C are yf 5 0.896 3 1023 m3/kg and yg 5 3.824 3 1022 m3/kg, respectively.

This paper contains some numerical problems and their solutions related to the thermal engineering. It mainly puts an emphasis on the properties of a single phase and 2 phase mixture of wet vapor, e.g. specific volume, specific enthalpy etc. and dry vapor and the use of ideal gas equations and how we can use these concepts in our daily life
