Project Proposal and Planning

Learning Outcome 1: Critically evaluate a problem within the software engineering body of knowledge, including appraising established theories and recent industry developments; and

Learning Outcome 2: Devise a structured enquiry-based project relevant to professional practice with the use of appropriate principles and methods and with a suitable level of personal autonomy and accountability.

Task Summary

Develop a software engineering-based project proposal that includes details on how you will plan collect, analyse and prioritise your data.

Assessment 1 is a proposal of 1,500 words (+/-10%) for a project that you designed and developed. You (as the document originator and controller) can apply the subject methodologies (from modules 1-6) together with your industry practice insights in your response. The aim is to develop a proposal that will:
• enable you to plan, collect and prioritise your data; and
• enable you to analyse the relevant data (for your project) using the methodologies outlined in modules 1 to 6. This includes evaluating a range of user software requirements and ensuring that a reflective practice statement and project planning tools have been mapped to relevant engineering models and methods.
One way of doing this is to locate an organisation that values benchmarking and quality improvement initiatives. These can be found globally; however, it is recommended that you source a small- to medium-sized organisation in an industry in which you are professionally interested. Your course facilitator will assist you in this regard.
Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task.
Context
Many industries continue to rely on existing systems to initiate, plan, produce and evaluate their products and/or services. Due to paradigm shifts ‘away' from these systems, many organisations working within these various industries need to adjust their change-management strategies and embrace approaches that build awareness and create innovation.
Technology is a major driver behind the implementation of these new types of strategies. For example, many years ago, the creation of a new system (i.e., the Systems, Applications and Products [SAP] system), which promoted the integration of information technology (IT) platforms both internally and externally to organisations, drove one such change. As an enterprise solution, the SAP system provided flexibility and streamlined the coding language used between different unrelated systems. Its major disadvantage related to the costs associated with its implementation across organisations, as the scope of these systems favoured medium to large organisations only.
This is no longer the case. Today, continuous improvement initiatives have allowed this system to be implemented in much smaller organisations, which in turn has led to a more innovative product that allows for seamless integration across multi-industry settings. Innovative software enterprise platforms, such as the SAP system, have become the precursor for change in the logistics industry-a global industry that is now known for its technology and software engineering capability.
The assessments for this subject give you an opportunity to look at how systems and processes have changed based on your observations and reflections from your industry project.

Task Instructions
To complete this Assessment, you need to design and develop a project proposal that can be applied to a software engineering-based solution that supports the goals and objectives of the organisation. In your response, outline the goals and objectives ensuring that you use the resource materials from Modules 1-6.

Structure
Use the following guide to structure your project proposal (in which you should include details about planning, collecting, analysing and prioritising your data).

1. Introduction-Background Information
a. Provide a description of the organisation with which you have been placed and the nature of the industry in which it operates. Note: The organisation and industry should reflect your professional interests.

2. Brief outline of the organisation's Goals and Objectives (SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable,
Relevant and Timely).
Planning initiatives-requirements elicitation and project planning tools.
Collecting, analysing and prioritising your data-users' requirement needs and
benchmarking relevant engineering models and methods.

3. Brief Outline of Action Plan for Implementation

4. Recommendations

5. Conclusion

6. Reference List

7. Appendices

Contribution Statement
You also need to write a brief contribution statement of 150 words (+/-10%) outlining your individual efforts in the group project. This short statement must include:
- An overview of your tasks within the context of the group work;
- A statement detailing the specific ideas you contributed in relation to the issues considered; and
- A description of the role/s you played in helping put together this assessment task. Refer to the assessment rubric for more detail.

Referencing
It is essential that you use appropriate APA style for citing and referencing research.

Project Action Plan

Learning Outcome 1: Critically evaluate a problem within the software engineering body of knowledge, including appraising established theories and recent industry developments

Learning Outcome 2: Devise a structured enquiry-based project relevant to professional practice with the use of appropriate principles and methods and with a suitable level of personal autonomy and accountability

Learning Outcome 3: Communicate effectively in ways appropriate to the discipline, client, audience and purpose

Learning Outcome 4: Apply a systematic process of problem solving to identify and assess a real-world need and propose an appropriate solution to the problem

Learning Outcome 5: Critically reflect on personal and professional experiences to engage in independent development beyond formal education for lifelong learning.

Task Summary
Building on the work you have already undertaken for Assessment 1, you are required to complete an Action Plan for your software engineering-based project proposal. In Assessment 2, you will design and develop an Action Plan of 4,000 words (+/-10%) and (as the document originator and controller) apply the subject methodologies (Modules 1-9) and any industry practice insights as part of your response.
The aim is to develop an Action Plan that:
• updates your project proposal (Assessment 1); and
• adopts an informed approach for the implementation of your project proposal using the methodologies outlined in Modules 1-9. It is expected that continuous improvement initiatives will be central to your Action Plan. Your course facilitator will assist you by providing examples as to what kinds of continuous improvement initiatives might be of relevance to your Action Plan.

Please refer to the Task Instructions (below) for details on how to complete this task.

Task Instructions
To complete this assessment, you need to research, describe and answer the following questions and statements:
1. Project plan update: Has your project proposal changed from its original intention as outlined in Assessment 1. If so, in what ways has it changed? If not, justify the reasons why it has not changed (e.g., the effective use of project planning tools).
2. Review Assessment 1 and outline (and justify) the key features that are relevant to your project.
3. Develop and create an informed Action Plan implementation strategy with initiatives. Using relevant software engineering processes, supported and managed by identified business models outlined in Modules 7, 8 and 9, produce a report that includes (at a minimum):
• A management strategy for implementing the project. Include: the scope definition, the resource allocation, the milestones, a source control outline, a work breakdown structure, a control and monitor process and a risk management overview;
• A software engineering process relevant to your industry; and
• Business models, such as lifecycle models, and a time-value (present value) and break-even analysis.

Structure
Use the following guide to structure your project proposal, planning and implementation report:
1. Executive Summary

2. Introduction-Background Information
Make additions to the description of the organisation and the nature of the industry in which it operates-this description should be aligned with your professional interests.

3. Brief Outline of the Organisation's Goals and Objectives (SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely)

4. Project Plan Update: Review the planning initiatives-requirements elicitation and project planning tools.

5. A Comprehensive Review
Justify and provide a comprehensive review of the key features included in Assessment 1

6. Action Plan Implementation Strategy and Initiatives
Provide an informed approach to implement your project using the resource materials from Modules 7, 8 and 9 (include the features outlined above).

7. Recommendations
8. Conclusion

9. Reference List

10. Appendices

You also need to write a brief contribution statement of 150 words (+/-10%) outlining your individual efforts in the group project. This short statement must include:
- An overview of your tasks within the context of the group work;
- A statement detailing the specific ideas you contributed in relation to the issues considered; and
- A description of the role/s you played in helping put together this assessment task.
