Trustees, presidents and faculty members play different roles within the university, thereforethey have very diverse values. Trustees are more concerned with the business aspect ofthe university, how it makes and spends money. The president is responsible for makingsure the university adheres to any state or federal legislation, while the faculty areconcerned with how students are educated. The different roles held by the individuals inthese positions and their varying values create imbalances of authority which then lead toissues in decision making. In early universities the trustees made the decisions for theuniversity and consequently had all of the authority. As institutions have grown over theyears there has been contention over who has the power to make decisions for theuniversity. Trustees still believe that they should have control of budget, therefore makingthe decisions for the university, however faculty believe that they should be allowed tomake decisions about the university curriculum.
