Precision measurements often vary according to a normal distribution when repeated. The mean equal to the "true value" of the measurement if the instrument has no bias. The standard deviation of the measurements depends on the precision of the instrument. Suppose that a laboratory scale has standard deviation σ = 0.01 grams in repeated weighings of the same quantity. A student weighs a compound 5 times on this scale. The sample mean of these 5 measurements is 2.01 grams. The theory in the chemistry text says that the result is supposed to be exactly 2 grams. You want to determine if the sample result gives good evidence that the true amount of the compound is not equal to 2 gms. Carry out the test, find the P-value, and state your conclusion.
