Addictive disorders are becoming increasingly pervasive. They include addictions to alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription medication, as well as food, compulsive gambling and a wide range of other substances and behaviors.

The major schools or psychotherapy include psychodynamic therapy, behavioral and cognitive therapy, humanist and existential therapy, and family and couples therapy. Exploring the approaches to treatment involves one to examine and evaluate the methods of psychotherapy, as well as exploring the biological treatments, drug therapy, and alternative treatment methods, along with direct brain intervention.

The major schools of psychotherapy are:

  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Behavioral and cognitive therapy
  • Humanist and Existential therapy
  • Family and Couple therapy

The approach used for biological treatments for mental disorders are:

  • Antipsychotic drugs
  • Antidepressants drugs
  • Antianxiety drugs
  • Lithium drugs
  • Direct brain intervention.
