Ceftiofur, a third-generation cephalosporin, is classified as a critically important antimicrobial by the World Health Organization (WHO) and is highly valued in human medicine for treating life-threatening diseases. Yet emergence of Salmonella and E. coli and other enteric bacteria resistant to this drug have been reported recently. Describe one societal cause that may be linked to increases in Ceftiofur resistant bacterial strains.
