Step 1: Conduct Workforce Research
1. Visualize yourself professionally 20 years from now.
2. Think of a job title in an industry you would want to see yourself in 20 years.
3. Go online and search for your dream job title under 'Occupation Quick Search'. For example, if you want to be a Controller of a Fortune 500 company in 20 years, you should type 'Controller' in the quick search box . This search will give you a list of job titles related to your search.
4. Select your desired job title. In this example, you can select, 'Treasurers and Controllers'. The resulting site will provide information about tasks, technology skills, tools used by people in this profession, knowledge, skills, abilities, work activities, wages and employment, and outlook of this profession.
5. Use the research from this site to write the SMART goal for step 2.
Step 2: Your SMART Career Goal
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Each element of the SMART framework works together to create the goal that is carefully planned, clear and trackable. Goal setting is a helpful way to build the career you want. By setting objectives and creating a clear roadmap for how you'll reach your intended target, you can decide how to apply your time and resources to make progress.
1. Specific: Using the research conducted from Step 1, write exactly what you want to accomplish in 20 years? Use as much detail as possible.
2. Measurable:
How will you track your progress towards accomplishing your goals (e.g. skills, education attained)?
How will you know when you have achieved your goal?
3. Attainable:
What do you need to achieve your goal (i.e. resources needed)?
How will you improve your time-management skills?
4. Relevant: How is this goal relevant to your vision in life?
5. Time-Bound:
Using research from step 1, write what milestones you will need to achieve in 5 years to stay on track?
Using research from step 1, write what milestones you will need to achieve in 10 years to stay on track?
