Kath Weston's book " Travelling Light: On the Road with America's Poor."
Review questions for Exam II:
1. Briefly explain Marx's abstract analysis of the structure of capitalism and then show how it is related to Kath Weston's description of the experiences of marginalized people on long-distance bus trips. Sometimes, the people Weston talks to have jobs; other times, not. Certainly none are capitalists.
Show, in particular, with concrete examples from Weston's book, how "gifts" offered lower-class people ways of coping with their marginalization. You may want to consider the differences in how the gift functions in the present case compared to Ongka's. Notice also the special qualities of commodity exchange, that is, what a person on a long-distance bus trip could buy.
2. Compare and contrast matrilineal descent and natolocal residence among the Nayar to partilineal descent and virilocal residence among the traditional Chinese.
3. Compare and contrast how male-male sex was thought about, culturally defined, and socially organized among the Ancient Greeks and the Sambia of New Guinea.
