Question

A female criminal justice leader inspired me by her work ethic and work life balance. When I was assigned to her unit I observed her leading by example. There was nothing she asked her staff to do that she wouldn't or couldn't complete herself. If the unit was over hours she stepped in and helped, which made the team more efficient. She also addressed the needs' satisfaction of the team, by talking to her staff in a way that was effective. Oftentimes, leaders tend to multitask by answering emails or looking at their phone as someone is speaking to them; however, she gave her full attention by looking at them as they spoke. She also inspired me by sharing her personal experience which left a profound lasting impression. As a single mother, she was able to balance and prioritized both work and her personal life. She encouraged the team to take care of ourselves and to make family a priority. The leadership she demonstrates is transformational leadership. "Transformational leaders inspire, encourage, and empower employees" (p. 5). Overall, she has motivated me to work on my own work life balance and skills in the areas of effective communication and leading by.
