Training and development

Ershad is an 18-year-old boy who has just finished his SPM. Not wanting to waste time and to earn some money while waiting to enter college, Ershad went round the neighborhood looking for a part time job. He saw a vacancy at a nearby restaurant for kitchen helpers and waitresses. Ershad approached Fahmi the restaurant owner asking for a job. Ershad told Fahmi that he has no experience working in kitchens, aside from the few times when he cooked instant noodles or simple fried rice for himself. Fahmi told him not to worry, in his words "as long as you can hold a knife and willing to learn, we will provide the training for you"

On Ershad's first day, he was paired with Mamat, a senior cook with more than 15 years' experience. Mamat was not happy with the idea of having to train a new guy on the busiest night of the week and expressed his concerns to Fahmi. "You're our most senior employee, so that makes you the most qualified person to do the training," said Fahmi. A frustrated Mamat did not say much after that - and aside from giving Ershad a nod of acknowledgement, his only words to him were "just watch, and stay out of my way."

By the time the dinner crowd arrives, the entire kitchen line was bustling with activity and Mamat was doing his best to call orders and cook at the same time. As more and more orders came in, the stress level in the kitchen increased dramatically. It was at this point that Mamat turned to Ershad and shouted, "l need you to run to the fridge and get me more chicken!" Afraid to ask any questions, Ershad quickly turned to look for the fridge, and as instructed, "ran" through the kitchen towards the fridge. Unaware that Ershad was coming through, a kitchen helper who was carrying a load full of dirty plates turned and collided with Ershad. He never heard him coming. Plates went flying and crashing around the kitchen and a fuming Mamat screamed "get out of my kitchen!!!!"
