Traditional healers use methods and techniques and knowledge that was often passed down through generations within cultures. Two types of traditional healers are herbalists and shamanists. Herbalists in the power of nature and using holistic approaches to treat the body, mind and spirit. Shamans are spiritual healers use rituals and ceremonies to treat illnesses. Shamans believe in mediating between the physical and spiritual world. The traditional healing methods can be used with Western medicine to provide more holistic approaches to healthcare. "Traditional healing views human capacities holistically, whereas Western providers typically distinguish among physical, spiritual, and mental well-being" (Diller J. 2019). Herbalists can provide natural remedies and treatments to help manage side effects of medication and pharmaceutical treatments. Shamans can provide spiritual treatments and guidance to help treat patients going through treatments. Western medicine is also known as allopathic medicine. It is based more on science, research and evidence. Social workers must respect different cultures and personal beliefs including preferences for traditional or western medicine.
