Topic: "Tarantino's Pulp Fiction departs from the traditional conventions of the gangster genre"

Your major essay assignment is a film analysis. You may write on any film of your choice, but your analysis must apply a filmic element from the course and must be a persuasive essay.

A persuasive essay establishes a clear and specific viewpoint about a particular topic and uses supporting arguments and evidence. It uses an introduction, body and conclusion to uniformly and consistently develop what it is you're trying to prove. A persuasive essay is not an expository, descriptive or narrative essay.

For example, a persuasive essay topic can be:

  • Filmic techniques in modern Expressionist cinema reflect similar themes and techniques as those in such Expressionist classics as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatuand Metropolis
  • The tradition of French New Wave filmmaking has evolved into the neo-realism of Dogme95 and India's New Cinema
  • Film noir classics like Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard established a paradigm between femme fatale and male protagonist later echoed in modern noirs like L.A. Confidential, Pulp Fiction and Sin City

A persuasive essay is not:

* A History of Science Fiction Movies

* The Film Career of Orson Welles

The length of your essay is 1500 words, wordprocessed and double-spaced (handwritten essays not accepted). In terms of format, it will have a title page showing the title of the essay, the name and number of the course, the professor's name, the date, and your name. Your bibliography will include a minimum of 10 sources (either books or articles) and your references should be cited in correct bibliographic form. The bibliography page should be the last page of the essay and does not count as part of the length of the essay.

The focus of this assignment is on the on-going process of research, thinking, and writing-not on last-minute desperation. In order to get the most out of writing your essay, your ideas should develop over time. And remember, this assignment emphasizes your analytical skills, not your opinions.
