OPTION 1. Black Panther Party Community Survival Programs
The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary and people centered group that was founded by Merritt College students, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. When we see images of the Black Panther Party, over popular images of Black people holding guns, protesting, and fists in the air tend to dominate our vision space. However, the Black Panther Party's contributions far exceed soundbites and sensationalized images. During the journey of the Black Panther Party, members created and implemented over 60 community survival programs to address and tend to the needs of the people. Investigate, research and explore three community survival programs created by the Black Panther Party. Be sure to:
State the name and the date that the community survival program was created
Explain the significance. What was the program created? What specific group of Black people did the program serve? What was unique about the program?
What was the city, state, and/or national government's response to the program?
Discuss any efforts that sought to end or terminate the success of the program?
Discuss any efforts that were made to replicate what the Panther's created?
How did the neighborhood, the people, respond to the program?
How do these programs challenge misconceptions about the Black Panther Party?
When did you first learn about the Black Panther Party and what were your thoughts about them? After your research, what are your thoughts about their approaches to securing justice for Black neighborhoods and people in Oakland, CA.
Based on your research, name and describe the type of community survival programs that we need now in our 2023 reality.
In your opinion, what are the most important lessons from the Black Panther Party?
