Scenario 1 - Torts and Crimes

Carlos, a former employee of Walker Ford, entered the repair shop, claiming that the company owed him $600 in back wages. Carlos argued with the general manager, Mitch. After several minutes, Mitch told Carlos to leave the property, and Carlos refused to go, so Mitch called security to escort him off the property. Carlos ran to his car, but on the way, he grabbed some electronic parts valued at over $500 and drove away. Carlos refused to return the details until he was paid.

Discuss whether Carlos has committed any torts or crimes

If security had forcibly kicked Carlos off the property, would the security person or Walker Ford be guilty of assault and battery? Explain.

Scenario 2 - Intellectual Property

Dr. Nash teaches ethics at Northwest University, a for-profit school in Oregon. Several times during the semester, Dr. Nash made copies of articles and distributed them to her students. The daughter of one of the article's authors was a student in her class. The daughter told her father about the professor's copying, which took place without the father's or publisher's permission. Dr. Nash also copied images from the Internet to use in her Powerpoint presentations. Most photos were not public, and no attributions to sources were provided.
