Step: Use the concepts and principles (i.e., expectancy, valence, instrumentality) from the expectancy theory to illustrate how an employee chooses to work harder (or less hard) in a particular job because of the perceptions regarding the process (i.e., probability of attaining desired outcomes, attractiveness of the outcomes, probability of attaining desired performance) of his or her level of effort in that job. You can use a hypothetical example.
