Question

Thyroid disorders disproportionately affect more women than men. In thyroid function study, 6% of women over the age of 60 had a TSH of greater than 10 mIU/L compared to 2.3% of men. In addition, autoimmune thyroid disease is 5-10 times more prevalent in women (Ali et al., 2022). Thyroid disorders can cause a multitude of problems for the female including amenorrhea, irregular menses, and infertility (United States Department of Health and Human Services, 2019). When following United States Preventative Service Task Force recommendations, it does not recommend screening for thyroid disorders in nonpregnant, asymptomatic adults. The American Thyroid Association recommends screening adults over the age of 35 years old every five years (Garber et al., 2012). I believe as a clinician although there are guidelines in place to support clinical decision making the clinician can use individualized decision making to guide practice.
