Assessment Task: International Tourism in the Media Exercise
Description of Task
Each student must collect and critically examine an aspect of international tourism reported in the media over the last 6 months, i.e., from a newspaper, magazine or, on a website. The media item should report on news from the Asia Pacific region.
Your critical examination should:
• Briefly summarise the main points of the article.
• Suggest which aspects of international tourism are revealed by the article, e.g., the impact of a terrorist attack on international tourism; climate change and international tourism; new developments in the international airline industry, etc.
• Provide a reference for the media article.
Students can use the Factiva electronic newspaper database held on the La Trobe University library catalogue which provides access to thousands of newspaper articles.
Word limit: The word limit for the Media Exercise is 1,000 words

Description of Task
"The Asia Pacific region faces significant challenges as it grows and develops international tourism to and within the region. Some of these challenges are similar to other areas of the world while some are unique to the Asia Pacific region".
(a) In a research-based report, discuss each aspect of these sentences.
(b) In your report you should discuss at least one of the following bullet points provided below:
• Cultural similarities and differences - languages; religion; political history;
• Relative costs - the cost of living and exchange rates between countries in the region;
• Location and concentration of natural and manmade attractions in the region;
• Level of economic development in countries across the region; and,
• Political factors - either inhibiting or encouraging tourism in the region.
(c) Make suggestions on some possible strategies which could be employed by tourism organisations and/or governments in the Asia Pacific region to address these challenges.
Assessment Task: Reflective Exercises
Description of Task
Students must complete each reflective exercise by the outlined corresponding due date and submit via the Turnitin link on LMS. These exercises should be completed in a WORD document, approx. 500 words and in the form of, but not limited to, use of words, pictures, videos, tables, graphs. These reflective exercises are designed to encourage students to reflect on each topic and in a sense, serves as a form of reflective brainstorming. Some topics may be more familiar to students than others and it provides the opportunity for creativity and to share personal experiences if relevant.
Reflective Exercise One:
"International tourism demand and world patterns of travel are not random".
Explain this statement. Describe the range of factors which currently influence the flow of international tourism between countries and, to and from different parts of the world.
Reflective Exercise Two:
"In 20 years from now tourism consumer behaviour will be very different to that of today"
Discuss this statement.
